Twitter CEO Elon Musk Plans to Charge Users $1,000 Per Month for Verified Checkmark
By Movieguide® Staff
As Elon Musk tries to keep Twitter profitable after acquiring the company in Oct. 2022, recent reports revealed that users may have to pay for verified check-marks.
In the past, Twitter issued blue check-marks to high-profile accounts for free, with the ability to give and take away the verifications without reason.
However, Musk quickly scrapped the old system, requiring users to pay for their verification.
Movieguide® previously reported:
Elon Musk recently responded to backlash over changes he made to Twitter after the Tesla CEO acquired the social media platform in a $44 billion deal last month.
Musk said that he wants to do away with the current system for the blue checkmark, which previously indicated verified users.
The SpaceX founder said that he wants to implement a paid subscription of $7.99/month for Twitter users to receive the blue check-mark.
“Far too many corrupt legacy Blue ‘verification’ checkmarks exist, so no choice but to remove legacy Blue in coming months,” Musk wrote in a tweet.
The term ‘legacy” referred to Twitter’s old system of handing out check-marks to profiles with high follower counts and media notoriety.
“Blue check will be the great leveler,” Musk added in another Tweet.
The Tesla CEO doubled down on this decision, with reports that companies and brands will have to pay over $1,000 monthly for verification.
Variety reported:
Twitter is asking organizations to pay $1,000 per month, plus an additional $50 monthly for each affiliated sub-account, to maintain the gold check-mark verification badges the company introduced in December, replacing the blue check-marks for businesses, according to social media consultant Matt Navarra, who tweeted the details Friday (see below). Tech news site The Information confirmed the details, adding that the pricing “is being finalized and could still change.”
