Ty Pennington’s Health Scare: Why He Went ‘From the Red Carpet to the ICU’

 By Movieguide® Contributor

HGTV star Ty Pennington had a shock after he attended a movie premier last week. What he thought was a “sore throat” turned out to be a dangerous abscess that impaired his ability to breathe.

“Sunday I hit the red carpet for @barbiethemovie , monday I flew to Colorado to start filming in Breckenridge and Tuesday morning I woke up at 4am and could barely breathe ?,” Pennington said. “Turns out, that sore throat Ive had for the last month was actually an abscess which had grown so large it was closing off my airway. Next thing I know, I was intubated and flown to the ICU.”

KTLA reporter, Will Conybeare said, “He was rushed to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado where he had successful surgery on Wednesday afternoon and was released from the ICU on Thursday.”

“Pennington shared that he is currently ‘still recovering’ and thanked the hospital staff,” Stephanie Giang-Paunon reported for Fox News.

Pennington stays in good spirits. In a comment to a fan, he said that his hospital room “was the ‘party’ room.”

Movieguide® previously reported on HGTV’s change to reflect America’s economic state in their shows, which focused in part on the creation of more emotional storylines. “Perhaps this shift in HGTV’s programming narrative will allow the hosts to be more open about their faith on the network,” wrote Jessilyn Lancaster, Movieguide®‘s Managing Editor.

Pennington’s BATTLE ON THE BEACH is now in its third season on HGTV. Other current HGTV shows are Ben and Erin Napier‘s HOME TOWN: Season 7 and HOME TOWN TAKEOVER: Season 2.
