U.S. Astronaut Praises God Amid Being Stuck in Space: ‘He’s at Work in All Things’

After nine months stranded in space, Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams are glad to finally be making their way back to Earth — but Wilmore hasn’t been worried, knowing that God’s had him in His hands the whole time.

“What is your life lesson or takeaway from these nine months in space?” CBN asked the astronauts on Monday while they were still suspended in zero gravity at the International Space Station.

“Well, in answer to your question, I can tell you honestly, my feeling on all of this goes back to my faith,” Wilmore replied. “It’s bound in my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is working out His plan and His purposes for His glory throughout all humanity, and how that plays into our lives is significant and important however that plays out.”

“And I am content because I understand that. I understand that He’s at work in all things. Some things are for the good. Go to Hebrews chapter 11. Some things look to us to be not so good, but it’s all working out for His good for those that will believe, and that’s the answer, so thanks for asking,” he said, smiling.

The astronauts left the ISS at 1:05 a.m. EDT on Monday and landed safely in the Atlantic Ocean right before 6 p.m. EDT on Tuesday.

The two astronauts were left at ISS on June 5, 2024. Their trip was meant to last 10 days, but their original return spacecraft was deemed unfit for travel. The pair waited 285 days to hitch a ride home with SpaceX travelers Russian astronaut Aleksandr Gorbunov and NASA’s Nick Hague.

Before Wilmore took off to space, he was confident that God would be working things out, whatever happened.

“Our families have been a part of this from the beginning…As far as preparing them, they’re prepared. We trust in sovereign God,” he told reporters. “Whatever the plan is, we’re ready for it, whatever that might be.”

Despite being away from loved ones for much longer than expected, the two have kept positive spirits.

Williams said they’ve been “feeling good, working out, eating right. We have a lot of fun up here too,” she added. “People who are worried about us, really, don’t worry about us…We’re a happy crew up here.”

The astronauts’ lengthy time in space will leave a temporary toll on their bodies as they adjust to life on Earth. The pair could not stand up when they arrived home Tuesday and will work with a rehabilitation team for 45 days to walk again, regain muscle mass and bone density and rebuild their strength.
