Voice Actor Kevin McNally Calls New Role in THE WINGFEATHER SAGA: ‘A Special Joy’

Actor Kevin McNally, who most famously played Joshamee Gibbs in THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise, recently talked with CBN NEWS about what drew him to the role of Podo Helmer in the new series based on the books by Andrew Peterson.
“I think he’s [Podo] a really hard-edged with a slightly soft interior character,” McNally said. “[Podo is] a crusty old grandad who’s very tough but adores his grandchildren and is trying to save them from a big family secret.”
But it wasn’t just the character that drew him to the project, but the theme of the series as a whole.
“I like some dark elements and it’s very funny. It’s beautifully executed,” he said.
He goes on to explain what attracts him to the “dark elements” of a story.
“This has a lot of darkness in it as well, because life is full of light and dark, but I like the message of this. It’s that even in the darkest time, if you work together as a family or a group you can probably see it through.”
The England native, whose also appeared in other popular TV shows like DOWNTON ABBEY and THE CROWN, said that working on a project for children is a “special joy” that he hasn’t had a lot of opportunity to do in the past.
“It’s always wonderful to see the children because, for them, it’s all of the things that we create, the stories that we create, they’re real, they really believe them. And it’s a wonderful thing to remember yourself— that innocence of childhood,” McNally said.
Movieguide®️ recently reviewed the faith-based animated series:
In THE WINGFEATHER SAGA, Chapter 2 and 3, on angel.com, the Igiby family lays low from their reptilian overlords, the Fang. Tink, the adventurous middle child, stumbles upon a hidden treasure map. Janner, the eldest son, cautions his brother to hold off the treasure hunt. However, in the third chapter, “The Catacombs Below,” Janner receives terrible news. The Fang soldiers are kidnapping children all over town, and his siblings are next. With no other option, the three children embark on a quest into the woods to find a way to defeat their Fang overlords. They soon discover a secret that will change their lives.
The second and third episodes of THE WINGFEATHER SAGA are a welcome addition. They contain top-tier art direction, immersive world-building, and several positive Christian virtues. The Igiby siblings exhibit the importance of sacrifice, bravery and protecting one’s family members from evil. Similar to its pilot episode, Chapter 2 and 3 will entertain children and parents alike. However, the episodes introduce light peril, dark forest creatures, and the kidnapping of human children. MOVIEGUIDE® stresses mild caution for younger children.
