Warner Bros. Pulls TENET from Release Calendar Indefinitely

Christopher Nolan’s espionage thriller TENET was pulled from the release calendar indefinitely as theaters around the country are still shuttered.
The movie, which was originally supposed to open July 17 but was pushed back twice to August 12, was poised to attract moviegoers back to the big screen with a late summer release. Now, theaters could face even worse financial repercussions as the blockbuster was set to bring in millions in revenue.
Movieguide® previously reported that TENET was one of the movies that could save the summer box office.
Upon delaying the feature, Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement, “We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for ‘Tenet,’ Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature.
“Our goals throughout this process have been to ensure the highest odds of success for our films while also being ready to support our theater partners with new content as soon as they could safely reopen.”
In the statement, Emmerich also hinted that the movie could see an international release before it is released in the U.S. and Canada.
“We are not treating ‘Tenet’ like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that,” he said.
However, an international release could both help and hurt the movie.
Variety writes that the movie is, “intentionally shrouded in secrecy – and a staggered rollout could raise concerns about piracy and spoilers.”
On the other hand, this could be good news as the global box office is slowly coming back to life. Previous movies by Nolan have also earned more than 50% of their profit from the international box office.
Warner Bros., is staying positive through the process of shuffling release dates.
“We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from exhibitors and remain steadfast in our commitment to the theatrical experience around the world,” Emmerich said.
Now, the wait is on to see if Disney holds to the August 21 release date of the live-action MULAN (2020).
But, with no set reopening date for theaters in Los Angeles and New York, moviegoers might have to wait until September to head back to the big screen.
