‘We’re Christians, Christ is Reigning’: Kirk Cameron on Christmas Traditions

By Movieguide® Staff

Outspoken Christian and actor Kirk Cameron is best known for starring in classic sitcoms like FULL HOUSE and GROWING PAINS. However, in 2014, Cameron not only starred in but produced his first Christmas movie, SAVING CHRISTMAS.

At the time, Cameron wanted to break down some of the misconceptions surrounding the Christmas holiday, a timely admonition as we enter the holiday season of 2021.

“I made SAVING CHRISTMAS because, number one, it’s hands down my favorite holiday of the year, my favorite season,” Cameron told Movieguide® in 2014. “I just love when the chestnuts start getting roasted and I hear the Christmas carols at the mall, and you know we break out the Nativity set, the lights, the decorations.”

“Now, increasingly, I’m finding there’s more people—that are even inside the church—who are kind of going back to a philosophy of, ‘let’s just go back to the Torah and it’s festivals and forget stuff like Christmas and Easter and all of that,” he added. “They say those used to be pagan holidays, and so you should have nothing to do with Christmas trees. Nothing to do with stockings. Nothing to do with St. Nick, especially St. Nick, and just skip Christmas; go dark on December 25.

“And so with all of that I figured it was time someone needed to stand up and say, ‘Hold on, Christmas is the most exciting celebration of the year and it’s something that ought to produce joy in the hearts of everybody, and we need to celebrate it loudly.'”

Cameron said that while pagans may have established some Christmas traditions, he pointed to how the true Christmas story about the Son of God coming into the world should change our perspective.

“Many Christians are very easily deceived when you’re told by some pagan that Christmas used to be a pagan holiday, therefore, you shouldn’t have anything to do with it,” he said. “My response back is, ‘Well, that fits just perfectly because we used to be pagans. But we’re not anymore.’ This may be Thursday, which is really Thor’s day, that’s where we get it, and Wednesday, Woden’s Day, but you and I have no problem having Bible studies on Wednesday because we don’t believe in Woden. We’re Christians, Christ is reigning.

“[Its] the same with Christmas,” he continued. “We can celebrate the birth of the incarnation of the Son of God with joy and feasting and trees and decorations and mistletoe, because those pagan gods and stuff the druids did, that’s all gone. That’s out of the picture now, and we are using everything that God made to point people to the one who redeemed it all.”
