What is Generative AI? Here’s How to Use the Tech Safely

AI is becoming more and more common these days — but what is it? And how can you use it safely?
“Generative AI (GenAI) is a type of artificial intelligence technology that can produce various types of content, including text, imagery, audio and synthetic data,” TechTarget explained.
In other words, generative AI can create words, music, pictures and video — all from just some suggestions from a user.
“Before, AI was what we call ‘predictive,’ it can tell whether a tweet or a news story is positive or negative,” Manasi Vartak, the chief AI architect at Cloudera, told USA Today. “But now you can write a whole news story, which is creating content from scratch, which is why this is so different and mind-blowing.”
The problem arises when these AI programs get too creative, which can lead to silly and wrong answers — as well as serious misinformation.
Forbes wrote that generative AI programs “are designed to serve probabilistic answers from training data and can be a little too eager to provide answers. Rather than saying ‘I don’t know,’ they are known to make stuff up, unleashing a Pandora’s box worth of problems, from brand damage to regulatory breach.”
There can also be a bias in these programs, depending on what sort of information is being fed to train the program.
Many creative professionals have also expressed concern about the potential AI has to push them out of their jobs.

There are ways to use generative AI safely, though. Vartak emphasized the importance of leading the AI, and not the other way around — “Generative AI should be your navigation partner, not your driver.”
“Give it some ideas, let it generate some text, then go and review it, make sure that’s accurate,” she explained. “Trust but verify.”
Vartak continued, “Think of it as your sidekick. You’re going to be able to utilize it to…have more fun and be more productive in your daily lives. I think all new tech is hard, but this one is here to stay and it can be a force for good.”
It’s not surprising people are trying to figure out ways to safely use AI technology. Companies all over the world are pumping major money into the tech, with no plans on slowing down any time soon.
