What Makes Jesus Different in THE CHOSEN Season 5
By Movieguide® Contributor
While fans of THE CHOSEN have come to know Jesus as a level-headed person, Jonathan Roumie teased that they will see another side of the Messiah in the upcoming season of the show.
“Religious leaders basically subvert the meaning behind and the practices of His faith at the time and exhort the poorest of people during the holidays, you know, when they all had to bring their sacrifice to be slain for the passover,” Roumie told THE VIEW. “You know, you had to pay taxes, you had to pay Roman tax, there’s a conversion tax and there’s all of these bills and fines that were levied, essentially just to be able to practice your faith.”
“And among very many other things, that was the last straw for [Jesus],” Roumie continued. “And so, He wanted, basically, to reset the temple. And we see that in this season.”
Season 4 of the show culminated in the resurrection of Lazarus, leaving no room for doubt that He is who He says He is. Now, during Season 5, the time is drawing near for Jesus to take His place on the cross. Season 5 covers Holy Week and all the good and bad that happened in those six short days.

“So, Season 5 picks up at the start of Holy Week on Palm Sunday,” Roumie recently told GOOD MORNING AMERICA. “So, Jesus is literally riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. Crowds have amassed. They know He’s coming, they’re waving the palm branches, they love Him. They’re ready to worship Him, ready to crown Him king on a Sunday. And then by Friday, He’s nailed to a cross. So, things dramatically changed in the course of those six days.”
To prepare to portray these events, Roumie has focused on ensuring his own relationship with the Lord is solid and spent many hours in the Word to let it inform his portrayal.
“For me, it really comes down to making sure that I’m right in my own relationship with God. And for me, that means acting out my faith, practising my faith and then trying to live it out…” Roumie said. “[Jesus] set a really high bar, and it’s not easy to follow in His footsteps – or sandal steps – but I try my best.”
