As Season 22 comes to a close, NCIS has already been renewed for Season 23. Here’s everything we know about the next season.
“This season, our new and returning series continue to showcase CBS as the leader in launching and programming the biggest hits with mass appeal for broadcast and streaming viewers,” Amy Reisenbach, the president of CBS Entertainment said when NCIS was renewed. “These returning shows represent a mix of long-standing hits and a new generation of fan favorites. In collaboration with our extraordinarily talented partners in front of and behind the camera, we look forward to delivering another successful season.”
While NCIS has been renewed for another season, the show has kept much of the plot under wraps. However, one thing that seems clear is that all of the current cast members are likely to return. This contrasts with the end of Season 21, when Katrina Law’s return was in question after her character, Special agent Jessica Knight, accepted an offer to work her dream job, which required her to move to a separate branch of the NCIS agency.
Though there is little question about whether the full cast will return, the future of some characters is still in the balance, as a synopsis of the finale teases.
“As NCIS investigates a dangerous connection between the Nexus cartel and Parker’s longtime nemesis, mob boss Carla Marino, the team uncovers a high-stakes plot involving stolen nuclear material. With time running out, Parker is forced into an uneasy alliance that could determine the fate of the operation — and his own future,” the synopsis reads, per TVInsider.
“I know the fans have really been craving a little bit more long-form storytelling. You’re going to get it,” added Diona Reasonover, who plays forensics scientist Kasie Hines, speaking about the finale. “This season ends with some of those longer story arcs that you have been hoping for, so we’re goin to satisfy a lot of people, I think.”
The original NCIS isn’t the only show in the universe coming back in the fall. CBS also renewed NCIS: SYDNEY and its new show NCIS: ORIGINS. At the same time, NCIS spinoff TONY & ZIVA will be launching on Paramount+, exploring the lives of the franchise favorites since their departure from the agency.
“We’re trying to address all of these questions, and the idea of trust, and how [Tony and Ziva] move forward…they’re trying to make things work while also parenting and having a lot of challenges thrown at them,” Cote de Pablo told Variety in 2024.
“Every choice that Tony and Ziva have to make in their adventure, their child is first and foremost in the front of their mind,” Michael Weatherly added. “When we were on the NCIS mothership, we didn’t have children.”
With four new seasons coming in the fall, NCISverse fans have a lot to look forward to, though they still have to weather a long summer before they can enjoy new episodes of their favorite shows.
