Where This Former Miss Universe Finds Her Identity

Demi Tebow, wife of former NFL star Tim Tebow, knows where her identity comes from, and it’s not her accomplishments.
Her new book, A Crown That Lasts, dives into the topic.
“I actually started writing this book shortly after I handed over my crown as Miss Universe,” she told Christian artist Matthew West. “That crown was something so special, so beautiful, such a great honor to represent my home country, we hadn’t won the Miss Universe title in 39 years.”
Although she was thankful for the opportunity to represent her country and wear the beautiful crown, when she had to give it to the next Miss Universe, she realized how many of her dreams were wrapped up in that crown.
“The moment that the title went away, it left me feeling like an absolute failure,” she told Life & Style. “I had to go and really untangle the roots of my identity and plant new seeds of truth in my life.”
“At lot of people can tell you how to chase your dreams, but not a lot of people can tell you what comes after you achieve that dream, and maybe it doesn’t work out the way you had hoped or anticipated or planned for it to work out,” she explained.
She continued, “Proverbs 16:9 tells us that in their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
As she discovered who she is outside of her accomplishments, Tebow felt she had to write a book to help others struggling with their identity.
“This book was born out of a time in my life where I couldn’t see that plan…That crown is what I had attached my worth and my value to,” she admitted.
In the end, Tebow realized one life-changing truth: A crown doesn’t give her identity and value, Jesus does.
“There’s nothing that I have honestly been able to find other than my faith in Jesus and the love that He has for me,” she said. “I don’t get to value just my identity for who I am but for who He is and who he says I am.”
Her book just released on Wednesday.
“In interviews I’ve been asked, ‘Who’s Demi-Leigh?’ and ‘What’s next?’ and honestly, I used to get nervous answering these questions because I didn’t know!” she wrote in a Wednesday Instagram post. “What’s been so fulfilling about this whole process is that I can now confidently say that I’m just a girl who is trying to live out my God-given purpose! And I believe that purpose is empowering women all around the world to come to know their true worth and value, and to walk confidently in THEIR purpose, every single day! ??”

Tebow, former Miss Universe winner and wife of NFL star Tim Tebow, has firsthand experience with what it’s like to put your identity in temporary things.
“I think this message really comes from thinking that I knew who I was, but I totally rooted my identity in something that was absolutely temporary,” she explained. “The night I handed over my crown as Miss Universe to the very rightful next winner, I left that stage, got in the car rushed to the airport to catch my flight back to South Africa, and I realized I forgot something on that stage.”
“And it wasn’t just that beautiful pearly diamond crown, sparkly crown, but I realized later on…I had forgotten the most important thing [which] was my identity,” she described.
