Where You Can Watch ‘Underdog Tale’ AVERAGE JOE
By Movieguide® Contributor
2024’s AVERAGE JOE is finally available to stream on Great American Pure Flix.
The movie, based on a true story, follows high school football coach Joe Kennedy’s journey from praying on a football field to a religious liberties battle in the Supreme Court.
Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:
AVERAGE JOE tells the true story of a high school football coach made famous after he was fired from his job for praying at center field. Joseph Kennedy, brilliantly played by Eric Close, recounts his life in an interview format. He starts with his childhood, where he became acquainted with abandonment and abuse. Despite his adoptive parents leaving him, he found his way into the Marines. However, Joseph still feels far from God. He recalls a conversation with a friend, the first positive influence in his life. Joseph then faces a choice that shapes the rest of his life.
AVERAGE JOE is a creative, well-acted, heartfelt movie based on an inspiring true story. It’s shot in an interview style, with Joseph and his wife, Denise, telling their story. Characters often break the fourth wall. This unique style is engaging and serves as a nice balance between the harsh reality of Joseph’s life before faith, and a testimony to his life as a servant of God. AVERAGE JOE has some scenes of child abuse and other violence. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.

“We are so proud of the film, AVERAGE JOE, produced in association with our partners at Pinnacle Peak Pictures, which has received favorable reviews across the board,” President and CEO of Great American Media Bill Abbott said in a press release. “The importance of Joe Kennedy’s story is that no American should ever be forced to choose between their faith and their right to work.”
“Joe Kennedy fought 8 years before winning at the Supreme Court for his right to pray in public,” he added. “While AVERAGE JOE is a movie everyone can root for, it is important to remember at its heart is awareness and gratitude for our constitutional freedoms and knowing, sometimes, you have to kneel to take a stand.”
“I hope people are encouraged to stand strong in their convictions and doing what’s right,” Eric Close, who plays Kennedy, told Movieguide® last fall. “I think sometimes it’s a scary thing to do that, you know, there’s a lot of fear, a lot of times people are afraid they’re going to get canceled or whatever it is, and yet when you know in your heart when something’s right, you need to stick to your convictions and stand strong but treat people with kindness in that pursuit.”
“It’s an underdog tale that will have audiences standing and cheering in the end,” he added.
