Marc Forster, the director of the new movie WHITE BIRD, discussed his heart for the project and explained why he believes it is valuable for audiences of all ages.

“This is a love story, and it’s, you know, an inspirational love story that really, I think, connects with people of all ages. That’s what I loved when I first read the script; I just read it and felt, ‘Oh, this sort of movie I can watch with my daughter and I can watch with my mom and they both will walk away with an inspirational, hopeful feeling,’” Forster told Movieguide®.

“That is something I really want to create because I think it’s really what we need in the times we live in, sort of films like this that brings us together and connects us and believes in humanity,” he continued.

WHITE BIRD continues the story told in the 2014 movie WONDER, filling in details from both before and after the events of WONDER.

Struggling to fit in at his new school after being expelled for his treatment of Auggie Pullman, Julian is visited by his grandmother and is transformed by the story of her attempts to escape Nazi-occupied France during World War II,” a synopsis reads.

Featuring many of the same characters, WHITE BIRD highlights character development and the way that evil, and how we choose to fight it, can shape our worldview. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

WHITE BIRD is extremely well-told. It chooses subtlety over unnecessary violence or gore. In a wonderful balance, the movie manages to leave no doubt as to the nature of evil without showing extreme violence. WHITE BIRD has touching performances from all of the lead actors, especially Helen Mirren as Grandmère. It also has many wonderful moments reminding viewers to follow Jesus Christ’s command to “love your enemies” and show kindness to those we see as different. WHITE BIRD is a heartfelt experience for the whole family. It stresses the need for love, compassion, kindness, and forgiveness. However, some heavier themes of war, require some parental discernment for younger children.

The inclusion of faith was a crucial component for Forster who believes that hope-filled, inspirational movies are good for the soul.

“I love humanity, and I love movies, you know, that ultimately have hope at the end of the movie,” he said. “I’m a big believer in hope and in compassion. I just always believe; I always have faith that humanity will figure it out in the end, so I like stories that feel inspirational and ultimately you come to know the heart. That’s important to me.”

WHITE BIRD is in theaters now.
