Why Actor Ian Somerhalder Traded Hollywood for Farm Life
By Movieguide® Contributor
VAMPIRE DIARIES actor Ian Somerhalder doesn’t regret his decision to leave Hollywood for farm life.
“I love what I did for a really long time,” he said of his acting career. “I love making films, I just did it for so long. We had an amazing run. But this is our 2.0 version, about to be 3.0 version.”
Somerhalder previously told PEOPLE of farm life, “[It’s been] magic. It’s really the way it’s always supposed to have been. I think now you’re seeing a lot of people who were working in corporate offices, and you can see it now from a societal standpoint. People are having a really hard time getting back to work.”
His wife, Nikki Reed, added, “When you see the way that nature operates, you find compassion. It’s a beautiful thing to see what’s happening with children, to watch them participate in the growing of their food and the understanding of what food is and where it comes from.”
“I started connecting the dots between what you do for the planet and what you do for yourself,” she continued. “It’s an evolution and a lifelong pursuit. It’s become a way of living so much simpler.”
The couple recently executive produced a new documentary called COMMON GROUND, which explores “how regenerative agriculture can help heal the soil, our health and the planet.”
“This film will change your life. Forever,” wrote Somerhalder on Instagram. “How? Because you’ll see first hand that REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURAL can solve so many of our scary global problems AND we have a clear SOLUTION and PLAN to balance our climate while building robust economies. Win. Win. Win. The solution has been under our feet the whole time. It’s amazing. BECAUSE without a healthy planet we have nothing but climate disasters, wars and overall unhealthy land and unhealthy bodies. Soil health equals human health. It’s glorious and it’s real.”

VAMPIRE DIARIES star Ian Somerhalder is sharing why he left Hollywood behind for a peaceful life on a farm with his family.
“Walking through the farm with kids and dogs and family,” he said of his new life. “Every stop, you’re pulling off of trees or off of bushes, pulling up out of the ground and feeding everyone as you’re moving through the farm.”
He and wife and fellow actress Nikki Reed left Los Angeles four years ago for a more rural environment. They share a 6-year-old daughter, Bodhi, and a 5-month-old son. They have not publicly shared his name yet.
In addition to working and raising their kids, Somerhalder and Reed grow herbs and take care of the farm’s cows, donkeys and goats.
“It is a lot of work,” Somerhalder said. “It’s unbelievable when you see these amazing creature life forms…and how they all live on the farm together is really special.”
