Why Grammy-Winner Brandon Lake Still Leads Worship at His Local Church

Five-time Grammy award winner and recent K-Love Male Artist of the Year recipient Brandon Lake revealed why he still leads worship at his local church.
“I tell writers all the time, it benefits me to be still connected [with my church],” Lake told Christian Headlines.
The singer described how his involvement in his church nourishes his soul, like how “a tree planted by streams of water” will have “tree roots that flourish.”
“And that’s important to me. I was raised in a local church, I’m a PK [pastor’s kid], and that’s not changing. And so, I stay healthy when I stay planted,” he explained.
His church community also inspires his music. Songs are best when they have a “face,” Lake explained.
“I tell writers all the time: You’ve got songs walking around in your foyer everywhere—you’ve just got to go get to know them,” he said.
Lake described how his hit song “Too Good to Not Believe” illustrates this.
“Every lyric of that bridge–I’ve seen cancer disappear, I’ve seen metal plates dissolve, I’ve seen families reunited, I’ve seen broken bodies healed, I’ve seen addicts finally free,” he expressed. “Those are lines that have faces to them. And they are people in my church, and we have seen the reports. And that’s why I feel so encouraged and challenged when I’m out leading worship is to lean into that.”
Lake continued, “The thing we all have in common…is pain and disappointment. And so I don’t want to just come out and entertain and sing some songs. I want to go after the things people need the most, and they need healing.”
“There’s testimonies all around me, which gives me the faith to continue to do what I feel called to do,” he added.
This past February, Lake won two Grammys for Best Gospel Performance/Song (“Kingdom”) and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song (“Fear Is Not My Future”).
“Never underestimate what God can do with a seed. It’s amazing the big things He can do in small places and seemingly insignificant places. In a season where the world is ridden with fear, we know that perfect love casts out all fear and that perfect love is Jesus Christ,” Lake said after receiving the Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song award.
Movieguide® recently reported on Lake:
“Gratitude” was initially released in 2020, but it wasn’t until now that the single caught on with listeners after it was featured in THE CHOSEN and THE VOICE.
“It wasn’t even one of my favorites when we first began recording it,” Lake confessed. “The production just wasn’t moving me at first. I re-recorded it probably four or five times and then just said, ‘Let’s take all the production away. Just put me in front of a microphone with an acoustic and I’m going to sing it as organically as I can.’ The version you hear is basically a one-take of me singing it, and then we put [production] around to support that.”
