Why Do People Get Their News From TikTok?

TV news used to be the first-place people would turn to for current news, but recently a survey has shown that people turn to TikTok and other social media platforms over traditional news outlets.
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism conducted their annual Digital News Report which stated that people pay more attention to celebrities, influencers, and social media personalities over journalists on social media platforms.
Reuters Institute Director Rasmus Nielsen stated, “There are no reasonable grounds for expecting that those born in the 2000s will suddenly come to prefer old-fashioned websites, let alone broadcast and print, simply because they grow older.”
Roughly 94,000 adults participated in the survey, less than a third of those participants said that they would prefer their stories selected for them to get news. However, people still would rather an algorithm have their news selected for them.
Despite the positive attributes Tik Tok contains, the social media platform is not safe for kids or even young adults.

A new survey conducted by Variety’s VIP+ explored how social media is slowly becoming people’s No. 1 news source and the danger that that poses to unbiased information.
…The survey found that nearly half of respondents, ages 15-29, use social media as news sources. Meanwhile, respondents over the age of 60 believe that misinformation is easier to spread due to the popularity of social media.
The study also found that around one in five respondents aged 15-29 think that news on social media is more accurate than news on TV. Furthermore, one in seven of the same demographic said that social media is their only news source.
