Why Great American Family Star Jesse Hutch ‘Follow[s] Jesus Christ’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Great American Family star Jesse Hutch shared why he is so open about his faith and how that has impacted his career in the entertainment industry.
“You need a base to operate from no matter what you do…” Hutch said in 2020. “For my wife and I, it’s faith; that’s where we go to because there’s not a lot of good leaders out there, and that’s just a fact, and so who am I gonna follow? You have to answer that question, and for me, I follow Scripture, I follow the Word of God, I follow Jesus Christ.”
Understanding the influence that media has on people’s beliefs and opinions, Hutch has committed himself to only starring in roles that he believes honor the Lord. Even if the story is not explicitly faith-based, the characters need to be acting in positive ways for Hutch to take on a role.
“A big important factor of life is serving others or reaching out to others,” he said. “You need to find out what that is for you. Love, faith, ‘lighting another candle,’ for me, metaphorically, means it’s not for you, you’re doing it for someone else. You want to extend and share and bless others.”
Hutch also believes allowing the Lord to guide your life is important. Only by following his path can we make the biggest impact for the good of the kingdom. The actor knows the difficulty of this firsthand; before becoming an actor, he applied to join the military twice, but both times, he felt the Lord telling him to do something else.
“I [had] no idea what I was being guided for and redirected for…but when I look back, I believe there’s a lot of great things that have happened in my life, and now I get to represent people that I’ve actually kind of always had a heart for,” Hutch said. “There’s a part of my that really is drawn to that sort of [military] lifestyle – the honor, the character that comes with it.”
However, despite his continued desire to be part of the military, Hutch finds peace knowing that the Lord has called him to acting, and through this avenue, he can impact a greater number of people.
“I think faith actually opens your world and it allows you to find a peace about those things… but then there’s this aspect where you go, ‘You know what, I am who I am. This is what God made me,’” Hutch said.
“What I have to tell people is it’s really important for you to find out who you are and what you believe because the business will tell you,” he continued. “If you don’t know, they’ll tell you.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Hutch’s faith:
Throughout his career, Hutch said that Faith has remained the one constant in his life.
“I think faith is for me, is always an ongoing lifestyle, it’s a choice. It’s being open to learn, it’s being willing to be wrong,” he said. “That is the basis that I springboard everything off of. It’s the only constant that’s been in my life since I was young, that doesn’t just change its opinions and its ideas because I feel different. It doesn’t change because of today’s politics. It doesn’t change because of my circumstance, whether it’s great or challenging or horrible. It’s a constant that is always coming at me. And I apply that to my everyday life—running into strangers, my work, my marriage, my finances, raising my kids.”
“It’s always there. It’s always kind of this guiding star, so to speak,” he continued. “I believe that God wants us all healed. I believe that we weren’t created to live in just this, just muddy, horrible disaster. You know what I mean? Yes, we all go through that, and that’s life, but, man, there’s, there’s something great on the other side of that mess. So just keep on going. Don’t give up.”
