Why Krypto the Super Dog May Not Be What You Expect …

DC Universe architect, James Gunn, explained how his real-life dog inspired him to include a super canine in his upcoming SUPERMAN movie.

“Krypto arrives on screens in SUPERMAN this summer,” Gunn wrote on Instagram. “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him.”

“I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life, Gunn continued. “What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”

While Krypto, a super powered dog from Superman’s home planet has been a part of the DC comic universe since 1955, he has never appeared in a live-action movie. The dog has traditionally sported super strength, intelligence, and senses, per Variety.

Krypto adds onto SUPERMAN’s extensive character list, all of who play important roles according to Gunn. The director has previously shared how he disapproves of including recognizable characters for no reason. The current character list includes Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luther, Jimmy Olson, and Eve Teschmacher.

“The whole point was it’s NOT a large film – I mean, not in terms of cast,” Gunn said last December. “It’s normal for single protagonist films to have other characters – much more unusual for them not to.”

“I don’t mind actual cameos – if it’s a glimpse or a moment, an Easter egg,” Gunn continued. “What bothers me is when they mangle an elegant story by shoehorning characters in – they aren’t there because the story calls for it, but for some other reason.”

SUPERMAN wrapped filming earlier this year and is set to release in July of 2025, kicking off the new DC Universe.

James Gunn thanked Cleveland for being such a great host while filming took place in the city and revealed that the shoot for the movie has almost been completed.

“Today we are leaving you (Cleveland) after six amazing weeks of shooting,” Gunn wrote on social media. “From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city – not once, not twice, but dozens of times.

“The wonderful background actors on the film were always so fun and funny and they clapped after takes, something that reminded us Hollywood cynics why we make movies in the first place,” Gunn continued. “The pride you feel in being the city where Jerry and Joe first created Superman was invigorating. You exemplify his spirit. But just as much it’s the pride you have in your community, your hometown, your radio stations and restaurants and gathering places that touched me.”

“Every city would be so lucky to have people that loved their city as much as you do,” Gunn concluded his post. “You simply can’t have been more wonderful, kind or accommodating to me and our performers and crew. Thank you a thousand times over for being our friends and partners on this film. Much love to you all. ?‍♂️❤️”
