Why Mark Wahlberg Grounds His Life in Faith: ‘Ready for Battle’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actor Mark Wahlberg joined the Jesus Calling podcast to discuss his faith and his experience working on faith-based projects.

“As an actor and a producer, I’m just trying to make really interesting content and trying to entertain people and trying make people laugh, cry, think, talk, discuss and do better,” Wahlberg explained.

“And as a person of faith, I’m just trying to grow and be better every day, be an example to my wife and to my children and to the people that look to me as an example.”

Wahlberg revealed how he grounds his day in prayer and the Bible.

Wahlberg added, “The more people I encounter, the more people I want to pray for and stories I hear of people I feel like I need to pray for. Sometimes I have to try to condense my prayer time and then, of course, read my daily scripture…And then I go and I do my workout, and then I feel like I can conquer the day.”

“Whatever is put in front of me, I think I can handle it. I feel like I am armed and ready for battle,” he said.

The actor also reflected on his faith-based project FATHER STU.

Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:

FATHER STU stars Mark Wahlberg as a rough man with a hard life. Stu has been so beaten up in the boxing ring that his doctor tells him he must stop boxing or die. So, he moves to Hollywood and gets a job as a butcher while pursuing acting. At his grocery store, Stu meets Carmen, a beautiful woman who tells him she will only see him if he comes to church and helps her teach Sunday School. Will Stu change his ways and follow God?

“Everything about it—all of the struggles, all the trials, all the tribulation, all of the way [Father Stu] dealt with adversity, the way he transformed himself when he found his calling, how committed he was and unwavering in his service to God under the most difficult of circumstances—he was a very, very special individual and he touched a lot of people,” Wahlberg stated.

“I would say that no person is beyond redemption, as long as they are willing to repent and want to make real change. We cannot turn our backs on anybody. This is not about excluding people.

“This is about including people and opening our arms and our hearts and our homes and everything else to love people and care for them,” he continued.

“And when they know that they’re loved and cared for and not forgotten, especially people who are in hard times, that means a lot to them,” Wahlberg concluded. “And that will encourage people to better themselves and pass that on to other people.”

Movieguide® previously reported:

Mark Wahlberg recently shared his thoughts on forgiveness and grace, and encouraged today’s culture to implement them into everyday life.

“There’s nothing worse than when somebody realizes that people don’t care,” Wahlberg explained, saying that it causes them to “lose hope and have no faith.”

“You cannot give up on people,” he continued. “And people are so quick to turn their backs on people. And negativity as a whole has just been amplified in a way that it’s really hard to remind people of the importance of loving and supporting people. People can do incredible things.”
