It’s been four years since LEGALLY BLONDE actress Ali Larter and actor Hayes MacArthur moved their family out of Los Angeles to Sun Valley, Idaho, and they don’t regret it.
“Our kids’ schools were shut down during COVID and we were like, ‘Why are we just sitting here?’ It was not working at all in Los Angeles,” said the actress. “So, my husband said, ‘Let’s take a road trip to Idaho [and] go skiing with the kids.”
Movieguide® previously reported:
“Our kids were stuck on screens with remote schooling,” MacArthur stated. “So, after a year, we just packed up the car and bounced. We figured it was an opportunity to go on an adventure as a family. And we just started driving north.”
The couple started building their 4,400-square-foot dream home in 2022 which was recently completed last year. With the help of interior designer Amanda Masters, who helped design their original home in L.A., they created a look that “fit into the natural geography of Sun Valley but didn’t have that traditional ‘cabiny’ feel,” Larter told Rue magazine.
The parents of two fell “in love with nature and the mountains and this entire new life,” the LANDMAN star continued. “We totally pivoted and went for it. We literally had our house [in California] for less than a year. We went back to L.A. and we realized we wanted to put our family first.”
The slower pace of living has helped them feel like they’re more “rooted in reality.”

“We’re so grateful,” Larter said, adding that her 14-year-old, Theodore didn’t take the move well initially. “He likes fast cars and designer colognes and that whole thing, like, he wants to be in the big city. I’m like, ‘At 18, you can go [back].’ … He really likes it now and I think he understands how great his wolf pack is there.”
The parents believe “if you can hike a mountain, you can run a boardroom.” Larter added, “We just believe in raising them that way.”
The family’s custom home was built to take advantage of its surroundings and scenery. Their kitchen, which overlooks the nearby mountains, has become a central gathering place.
“We believe in the importance of family dinner and it’s great when the kitchen is flooded with light,” Larter told People. “It becomes the most beautiful part of the home.”
Larter told US last year, ““Our life is so different there and it’s a small town, and it kind of holds you to a different type of accountability. It’s something that me and Hayes really wanted to do for our children, so we did.”
“We absolutely adore it, and we are so grateful to get to raise our family here. It’s really, really beautiful to live a smaller life with our children during this chapter.”
