Why This Character Is Returning to the MCU 17 Years Later

Director Julius Onah explained why he brought Betty Ross back to the MCU in CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD after she disappeared from the franchise following 2008’s THE INCREDIBLE HULK.
Betty Ross was one of the first characters introduced into the MCU. THE INCREDIBLE HULK was only the second movie in the franchise after IRON MAN. However, unlike the preceding movie, most of the characters from THE INCREDIBLE HULK have not played a major role in the franchise since. Even The Hulk was played by a different actor when he returned three years later for the first AVENGERS movie.
Now, as many actors and characters move on from the MCU after being part of it for over a decade, characters from THE INCREDIBLE HULK are being reintroduced. CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD brings the return of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross — though he is now played by Harrison Ford following the death of the original actor, William Hurt, in 2022 — along with his daughter Betty Ross, played by Liv Tyler.

“It was sort of a no-brainer to bring Liv back,” Onah told the Official Marvel Podcast, per ComicBook.com. “She just has this real humanity to her…The relationship she ends up having with Thaddeus Ross in this film is a real big part of his journey of trying to cement his legacy and redefine who he has been as a human being and as a leader.”
This comment from Onah surprised many fans who did not expect Ross to play a major role in the movie, however, it is clear that she will be important to the plot. While just how much screen time she receives has yet to be seen, fans won’t have to wait too long to find out.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD hits theaters on Feb. 14.
