Why This FULL HOUSE Episode Made Candace Cameron Bure Uncomfortable

By Movieguide® Contributor

Candace Cameron Bure is opening up about a FULL HOUSE episode some have called “uncomfortable.”

During an episode of the “How Rude, Tanneritos!” podcast, hosts and FULL HOUSE actresses Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber discussed the 1990 episode “Shape Up,” which sees Bure’s D.J. on a quest to lose weight before a pool party.

“It was very uncomfortable to watch,” Barber said during the episode. “It made me really feel for Candace too having to carry this storyline.”

Barber noted that series creator Jeff Franklin did consult with Bure’s parents and get them to sign off on the storyline, but that “doesn’t negate the fact that it’s a spotlight on a teenage girl and her insecurity.”

“I know it was something that she was sensitive about,” Sweetin added. “It’s hard when it’s something that you’re really dealing with to be like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna pretend that this is fine and that I can resolve it,’ you know?”

However, Bure sees the situation differently.

“It was a time even in my life that I had kind of gone through my own little weight loss journey and I think the writers, they were always taking stories that were true to us as people and kind of writing them into our characters,” she told PEOPLE while walking the red carpet at this year’s Movieguide® Awards. “And so they were really respectful and asked about that story, and I thought it was a good story to tell.”

The Movieguide® Awards are now streaming on PureFlix, where Bure is nominated for multiple Teddy Bear® Awards.

The actress added that she did not feel “uncomfortable” filming or talking about the episode but acknowledged that “times change, the social norms shift.”

“People look back on certain things and they could say, ‘Oh well that’s politically incorrect now,’ or, ‘You can’t talk about that now.’ But I think for the time and day it was really good advice from Aunt Becky,” Bure said, referring to Lori Loughlin’s character’s suggestion that D.J. eat a balanced diet.

Bure added, “Listed, I’m just happy people are still watching FULL HOUSE, so if they want to talk about it, go ahead and talk about it.”

Bure recently addressed rumors of another FULL HOUSE reboot, telling TV Insider, “I have not heard anything on another reiteration of that. I will say FULLER HOUSE was one of the best experiences of my life. I just loved it — a lot. I loved being able to play a grown-up D.J. Tanner, and I’d love to play her again.”

She also shared some details about her upcoming projects.

“I’m starring in another AINSLEY MCGREGOR mystery,” Bure revealed. “The next one will be out in April. Cameron [Mathison] and I are going to film a sequel to a Christmas movie we did last year [HOME SWEET CHRISTMAS]. I also have a few other projects that are separate from GAC that I’m really excited about.”
