Why This Iowa Basketball Star Doesn’t Cuss

Iowa Hawkeyes sophomore basketball player Owen Freeman stands out on the court for his 6-foot-10-inch build, but his commitment to clean language is what really sets him apart.

“I credit a lot of that to my faith. That’s a huge part of who I am,” he said of why he doesn’t cuss, adding that he is a “child of God.”

He understands that he might be the closest thing to a Bible someone ever reads, so he wants to set an example for Christ.

“I feel like I’m the Bible that people read,” he explained. “Not everyone’s going to open up the Bible, so I’ve got to shine God’s light.”

Freeman is known for sharing Christ with others through his words, too.

“He’s just fully locked in on it, and it’s truly an awesome thing to see,” Brock Harding, a high school and college teammate, said of Freeman. “He’s always going to talk to you about God, and it’s just something that’s great to have on your side.”

Likewise, his high school coach Sean Taylor said in a video shared by Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 2023 that Freeman lives his faith out “day to day.”

“That’s him, that’s his family,” Taylor added. “He’s not afraid to show it…He lives it, and I think that’s why people respect him so much.”

Freeman hopes that people will see Jesus through him.

He wants to “use my platform as a way to spread the love God has for us, the mission he has for us.”

“Some unbelievers aren’t going to read the Bible, they’re going to read us. So when we set that example of godly characteristics,” he added, “they’re going to [notice] ‘Hey, he’s different. Let me go see what all that’s about,’ and that’s our way of being able to witness to people.”
