Why This MLB Star Asked Kids to Sign his Hat Ahead of the 2025 Season

Minnesota Twins third baseman Royce Lewis has flipped the script on autographs. While at spring training in Fort Myers, Florida, Lewis asks any kid fan to sign his hat.
“Eight out of 10 of them are always like, ‘Me? You want me to sign it?'” Lewis told TODAY.com. “It’s just so funny to see their reaction. I think they’re just shocked. It’s almost as if no one’s done that before.”
One of the reasons Lewis decided to have kids sign his hat is because he could remember the days when he was their age, waiting patiently outside Angels Stadium in California.
As Lewis waited, a car rolled up next to him and his father. Turns out it was Torii Hunter, one of Lewis’s favorite players. Lewis would then watch as Hunter signed autographs for every kid that was there.
When Twins manager Rocco Baldelli saw Lewis’s hat, he asked who all the signatures were from.
“‘I got a bunch of kids signing it,'” Lewis said.
At first, Baldelli chuckled to himself but then commended Lewis for giving back to the game.
“I think they know me. Like, I’ve been doing stuff like this all the time,” Lewis said. “Whether it’s staying after and hanging out … just giving my time.”
One of Lewis’s favorite parts of interacting with young fans is when they ask him questions. For Lewis, no question is a “stupid” one.
“There was a young kid that asked, ‘Do you still have ice cream in your veins, what’s your favorite flavor, and what flavors are in your veins right now?’” Lewis recalled.
He then replied, “I don’t technically have ice cream in my veins, but my favorite flavor right now, the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, kind of like a blizzard or something like that.”
