Why This Video Game Movie Found New Popularity 3 Years After Its Release
By Movieguide® Contributor
In yet another Netflix revival story, UNCHARTED has immensely grown in popularity since being added onto the platform earlier this month.
UNCHARTED has enjoyed a stay at the top of Netflix, ranking in the platform’s top 10 movies for the last four weeks while outperforming new releases. Netflix revealed that the video game adaptation has racked up over 10 million views since it was added onto the platform.
The movie, which stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, loosely follows the plot of the Uncharted video game series as Nathan Drake is recruited by a treasure hunter named Sully to track down a hidden fortune. Along the way, Drake searches for his lost brother who went missing while searching for the same treasure.
When it was released, the movie drew a respectable audience, grossing over $400 million worldwide. Despite having an uplifting, redemptive storyline, many fans found the movie cheesy and subpar for the franchise, causing it to receive a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
UNCHARTED tells an exciting, terrific story. This big adventure will thrill moviegoers looking for a fun time at the movie theater. Also, UNCHARTED has a Christian worldview. For example, Nate has a strong respect for human life, and his pro-life attitude eventually rubs off on Sully giving the movie a redemptive premise. Also, UNCHARTED has Christian references and symbols, including a positive statement of Christian faith in one scene. However, Nate and Sully must steal a golden artifact from a ruthless Spaniard at an auction house to find the gold, and the movie contains excessive foul language. MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong caution.

However, many are giving it a second chance now that it has landed onto Netflix. UNCHARTED isn’t the first movie or TV show to find new life after being added onto Netflix. This phenomenon has occurred numerous times, causing older shows to not only regain popularity, but in some cases, receive new seasons. SUITS, for example, had a golden summer on Netflix in 2023 and though the series had ended in 2019, after accruing a massive fanbase on Netflix, a spinoff show SUITS L.A. was created, which is now running its first season on CBS.
