Will This Actor Return for SHREK 5?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Antonio Banderas, who plays Puss in Boots in the SHREK franchise, revealed that so far he has not been contacted to reprise his role for SHREK 5, but he is okay with that.
“I’m not so far, and I’m not being called for that,” Banderas told Parade when asked if he would appear in the movie. “PUSS IN BOOTS did very well. Number two got a nomination for the Oscar, and the movie behaved beautifully at the box office. But I am totally satisfied with the five Puss in Boots that I did. I don’t know what is going to happen in the future. Maybe they [will] call me tomorrow.”
SHREK 5 began production last summer and Dreamworks has announced it will release in December 2026. It’s not the only movie from the franchise in the works. Eddie Murphy teased that his character, Donkey, will receive a standalone movie in the future.
“We started doing SHREK four or five months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” Murphy told Collider. “SHREKS is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do DONKEY as well. So we’re gonna do a SHREK movie, and we’re doing a DONKEY [movie].”

The SHREK franchise has found success through spinoff movies about beloved characters. Puss in Boots has received two such movies, with the second receiving and extremely positive reaction from audiences. PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH was recognized at the Movieguide® Award Gala in 2023 for being the Best Family Movie of the year. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
Funny and exciting, PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH is well made, with interesting animation. The movie has a strong Christian, moral worldview where Puss in Boots must learn to be less selfish and egotistical, think of others above himself and realize he’s not invincible. Another character realizes the value of loving her family. THE LAST WISH also has a priest character and a reference to church. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children, because the Angel of Death and some other characters are scary.
While Banderas’ return for SHREK 5 seems unlikely at this point, along with Murphy, Mike Myers will return as Shrek and Cameron Diaz will return as Fiona.
