Will LEGO Pixar’s Disney+ Shorts Be Family-Friendly?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Five of Pixar’s most beloved stories are being expanded through a set of animated LEGO shorts coming to Disney+ in early September.
“Join some of your favorite LEGO Pixar characters for all-new adventures!” a synopsis of the series reads. “Sing along with Miguel in the Land of the Dead, help Merida and her brothers through a beary rocky situation, take an epic field trip with Nemo, Marlin and Dory, watch the Parr family try to save their neighborhood from Syndrome, and join Mater as he prepares Lightning McQueen for his next big race.”
These stories build on the worlds first introduced in FINDING NEMO, THE INCREDIBLES, CARS, BRAVE and COCO.
Disney and LEGO have a long-standing relationship with each other, with some of their collaborations — like Star Wars and Avengers — being the company’s most successful series.
LEGO media has proven to be some of the most enduring, especially among family audiences. Their popularity largely stems from their strong moral values. THE LEGO MOVIE, for example, stressed the importance of sacrifice and the value of creativity. It recently became a top movie on Netflix over a decade after its initial release. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
Extremely well done, THE LEGO MOVIE is hilarious. The animation is top notch, and the characters are clever. THE LEGO MOVIE stresses sacrifice and a father-son relationship. There’s also a political message. The villain in the movie is a dictator who stifles creativity and wants to control everything. All ages will enjoy THE LEGO MOVIE. However, there is some confusing content in that the villain calls himself President Business, but he tyrannically opposes a free market for business. THE LEGO MOVIE is a hilarious movie with great animation and a strong moral worldview containing a strong Christian allegory.
While the full plot for these shorts has yet to be revealed, because they mostly stem from older Pixar movies, they will hopefully steer clear from the immoral teaching the company has embraced within the past decade. Disney and Pixar, however, have already shown their understanding that family movies need to be family-friendly, which is much easier to lean into for these already-established stories.
The animated LEGO miniseries will be released exclusively to Disney+ on Sept. 4. Watch a trailer for these shorts here.
