Kat Dennings is talking all things SHIFTING GEARS, from her relationship with Tim Allen to whether or not the show will come back for a second season.
“I’m not what you call a super positive person,” Kat Dennings joked in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I kind of expect the worst, and then I’m pleasantly surprised. I don’t know. It’s a bad tactic. I need therapy. But I wasn’t expecting this kind of harmony on set.”
Dennings, a sitcom veteran with shows like 2 BROKE GIRLS and RAISING DAD under her belt, called SHIFTING GEARS’ set “a well-oiled machine.”
“So much of the crew has followed Tim for 25 years of work, and that’s really unusual,” she explained. “I’ve never even heard of that. There’s this familiarity in the crew that’s new for me and I’ve never had before. Everyone is just so happy to be there.”
In an interview with Deadline, Dennings spoke about her working relationship with Allen, calling him “so open and caring and just very accepting.”
“He really wants this to feel good for everyone,” she continued, adding, “This guy is born for this, and it’s really fun to watch someone be in their element like that. And his fans love him.”
Dennings continued, “The audiences we’ve had on SHIFTING GEARS I’ve never experienced anything before. I know that they’re there to see Tim, and that’s the beauty of the whole thing. They are so raucous. They have to turn down the volume of the audience in these edits because they’re screaming and laughing and it’s almost like a sporting event. It’s really something…So this has been a real treat.”
Tim Allen has also praised his co-star, telling TV Insider that Dennings is “so freaking talented.”
“I’ve been so freaking fortunate,” Tim Allen said of the rest of the SHIFTING GEARS cast. “They all can do their own scenes, whether I like it or not, without me. And it’s just as funny without me in these scenes,” joking, “Not a good thing for me!”

The actress also talked about the potential second season of SHIFTING GEARS, telling Deadline, “We haven’t [heard anything yet]. Of course we’re all on pins and needles about it but hopefully we will. You just never know with TV, but we’ve gotten such great numbers and I’ve heard that people are happy. So who knows?”
“I think the beauty of this is that I can conceive [multiple seasons of the show],” she continued. “[Riley, Dennings’ character] might end up there for five seasons or maybe in season three she does move out. Who knows though?”
Dennings pointed out that there’s also the still-unseen Sam, Riley’s brother, and the potential plot lines that might be introduced by his appearance in the show.
“He’s in the military [and] will come in hopefully in future seasons,” she explained. “And then there’s that whole dynamic with who he is. Where’s he going to live? So there could be just unlimited ways to go with this. I’m really looking forward to that and really hope so much that we get a season two.”
