Will This New Competition Show Transform Animation?

The media company Skybound is developing an unscripted competition show to search for the next great animation visionary.
The announcement of the project comes after the company acquired Spike & Mike’s Animation Festival last fall which it plans to relaunch as early as 2025. While little is known about the upcoming reality show or the reimagined film festival, the two are expected to tie in together, with the competition potentially serving as a testing ground for the animators that make a splash during the festival.
Skybound already has experience in the world of animation with the success of their superhero show INVINCIBLE. The series currently boasts two seasons on Prime Video with a third on the way.
In creating the competition show, Skybound is collaborating with DIGA Studios, a production company with experience creating reality TV competitions. DIGA’s previous projects include SELLING THE HAMPTONS, THE FLIPPING EL MOUSSAS and MILLION DOLLAR BEACH HOUSE.
While it is unclear how the show will be structured and what elements of animation the creators will emphasize, hopefully, they will pay close attention to the stories these animators want to tell.
Animation’s history lies with morally uplifting, family-friendly stories that are a treat for any age to enjoy. However, in recent years, Disney and Pixar have turned the medium into an arena to spread their immoral and anti-Christian ideas — to their detriment. While INSIDE OUT 2 offers a glimmer of hope that they are willing to return to their classic story formula, their other projects in the past years are not something to emulate.
Thus, Skybound would do well to emphasize creators who tell uplifting, honoring stories and continue to steward the medium in a better direction. The likelihood of this, however, is questionable as Skybound itself has often put out violence-heavy content.
