How Will This New WCTH Character Stir Things Up in Hope Valley?

A new character is stirring things up on WHEN CALLS THE HEART.
Miranda MacDougall brought new personality Edie Martell to Hope Valley during Episode 2 of Season 12.
“Edie is a lawyer,” MacDougall told The Edify Show of her character. “She has come to Hope Valley because she’s inherited her late uncle’s ranch, so she’s steadfast, she’s smart, she’s witty. She’s a total joy to play. She meets Governor Lucas Bouchard, and they have an interesting relationship from the jump.”
Horseback riding plays a big part in Edie’s life as she explores the property she inherited, Luckily, MacDougall has experience with the animals.
“I spent a lot of time around horses when I was in high school and then kind of on and off. I’ve always loved horses and loved riding when I could, so it was really exciting,” she said.

Soaps speculated that Edie might be Lucas’ new love interest after breaking up with Elizabeth Thornton in Season 10.
“They have vested interests in two very different places when they begin,” MacDougall explained. “Edie’s a lawyer. She doesn’t have much of a connection to Hope Valley when she first kind of enters the scene, given that she’s inherited a ranch in a neighboring town. But as things have it, Mr. Bouchard just keeps coming into her life, and they keep bumping into each other. So that said, I think that it lays a really nice groundwork for a complex relationship going forward.”
Season 12 of WHEN CALLS THE HEART premiered on Jan. 5, and Edie and Lucas’ relationship isn’t the only one whose future leaves a question mark for viewers. Some sort of resolution to Nathan and Elizabeth’s love story seems likely.
“As fans may remember, Nathan and Elizabeth had an on-and-off rapport ever since the former first appeared in season 6,” Good Housekeeping reminded fans. “Although Elizabeth was a widow after losing her husband Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) and had broken off an engagement to Lucas in season 10, she and Nathan finally decided to give things a go in the season 11 finale.”
