Yankees Pitcher Clay Holmes Says God was ‘At Work’ Amid Trade Last Year
By Movieguide® Contributor
One day MLB pitcher, Clay Holmes was pitching for the San Francisco Giants, and then the next, he was traded to the New York Yankees.
Despite the unexpected trade, Holmes “just felt like God was preparing me for some things that were about to happen…I just had this sense of peace, like, God’s kind of at work here and wherever I’m at, whether it’s Pittsburgh or baseball or not, I had this peace,” he said on an episode of Sports Spectrum’s podcast.
Movieguide® previously reported on Holmes’ faith:
In 2019, while still in Pittsburgh, Holmes questioned his baseball career. He placed his identity in baseball rather than in God.
“I just want to experience God working His power in my life,” Holmes told Sports Spectrum on that time.
“There’s gotta be more to life than just hanging my hat on the identity of this baseball thing. … When I think back on that time, it’s almost like Romans 12:1-2 comes to mind, just being a living sacrifice.”
“You present the Gospel. You know these things. But in response to that, it’s like your life becomes this living sacrifice,” he added.
Through his faith and trust in God, Holmes has become one of the best closers in the league.
Per Sports Spectrum, “Only one player in Major League Baseball has pitched more than 12 innings this season and not been charged with an earned run through Monday’s games: New York Yankees closer Clay Holmes. The 31-year-old has struck out more batters (21) than he’s allowed to reach base (20) in 17.1 innings, and his 12 saves are tied for the most in baseball.”
He has a career high of 24 saves, and this season, he is already at 12. When it comes to high-pressure moments, Holmes is ready.
The most recent moment that showed his skill came in a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. He left the bases loaded to secure the win for the Yankees.
Holmes characterizes his trade to the Yankees as a God move. Since he began playing for the team, the athlete reached the 2022 All-Star Game and has a 2.25 ERA.
Holmes is doing what God has called him to do and continues to trust in him through all of it.
