Youngsters Swap Traditional Jobs for Social Media and Gaming Roles
By Movieguide® Contributor
Young people are less interested in traditional 9-5 jobs in favor of online roles, but it’s so they can have a good work/life balance.
The UK’s Southeastern Rail commissioned a study to gauge the interest of young people in working in the rail industry. Researchers evaluated people aged 18 to 29 and found that they strongly desire to align work with passion and prioritize health and happiness, according to Cover Media.
One-third of the group aspired to be professional gamers, and over half wanted to work in social media.
Most of them (73%) wanted healthy life/work balances, and over half said they would consider environmental impact when receiving a job offer. One-third wanted to work for a company with mental health support, and many of them refused office jobs in favor of better work cultures. Just over a quarter believe companies should have a diversity and inclusion program.
A study by Credit Karma found that 49% of Gen Z’s 9 to 5 jobs negatively affect their mental health, and 47% said their work is unfulfilling.

Over half (51%) listed social media as their top hobby, 49% said travel and 41% said spending time with friends.
With a salary of £28,366 for those under 30, travel perks over £3,000 and discounted travel to Paris, jobs at the Southeastern Rail aren’t shabby. In 2023, it was named “Great Place to Work” at the National Rail Awards.
The company says gaming skills could come in handy in control rooms, and social media skills could come in handy in the marketing department. The social types might enjoy customer relations roles.
“We are working hard to change the perceptions around rail, and that means doing everything we can to attract young people to choose a career in rail’s exciting, digital and green future,” said Steve Foster, People Director at Southeastern.
“It is clear from this research that the variety of roles Southeastern — and the wider railway — can offer matches really well with the things which are important to young people — such as companies with sustainability focuses, support for all backgrounds, free travel as well as the opportunity to get out from behind a desk and working hours which suit your lifestyle and interests,” he explained. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve never worked in rail before or haven’t been on a train — the important question is ‘can you move people?’ if so — we would love to hear from you.”
