YouTube Launches Initiative to Teach First-Aid

By Movieguide® Contributor

On Wednesday, YouTube launched a new initiative to help people witnessing medical emergencies know how to administer proper treatment and action.

Per CNBC, “Videos from accredited health organizations such as Mass General Brigham will appear pinned to the top of relevant search results so they’re easy to discover. YouTube users in the U.S. can find videos on 12 topics, including CPR, seizures, choking, bleeding and psychosis. Most are a minute or two long.”

“Before performing any first-aid, the American Red Cross instructs calling 911 and alerting emergency services immediately — many health conditions are time-sensitive. After that, one can turn to YouTube for instructions on how to perform first-aid before medical help arrives. Such basic first-aid, if administered properly, can often prevent further harm to or help stabilize a patient before an ambulance arrives,” The Verge reported.

In an interview with CNBC, YouTube’s global head of healthcare and public health, Garth Graham, stated, “The whole idea is timing and conciseness and trying to share that information as easily as possible.”

“Our system is committed to providing credible, trusted information to our patients and, more broadly, to people seeking knowledge around the world,” said Associate chief academic officer at Mass General Brigham, Merranda Logan, MD, MPH.

With support from athletes, such as Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, YouTube aims to help educate people unfamiliar with medical emergencies to always be prepared.

In the promotional video, Hamlin stated, “You never know when it’s going to be your opportunity to step in and save a life. CPR and AEDs are why I’m still here in front of you today.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest during a football game early last year:

People from around the world have gathered to pray for Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest mid-game on Monday.

“Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition,” the Bills tweeted shortly after midnight on January 3.

Hamlin’s family said they will share updates on the 24-year-old “as soon as we have them,” and thanked fans and medical personnel for their support.
