YouTube’s Reign Continues as Other Streamers Snag Its Creators
By Movieguide® Contributor
As YouTube’s dominance continues, other streamers are taking note, and they want in on the action.
According to Nielsen’s February report, YouTube accounted for more viewership than any other platform, pulling 11.6%. Netflix came in second with 8.2%. It comes to no surprise, then, that Netflix is bringing some of YouTube’s viewership over to its platform by snagging a few of its biggest creators.
The first YouTube-turned-Netflix show occurred in 2016 when Netflix made a deal with Colleen Ballinger, also known as “Miranda Sings.” After playing her comedic character with red lipstick for many years, she headlined a special on Netflix titled HATERS BACK OFF. More recently, Netflix streamed YouTube personality Jake Paul’s boxing match against Mike Tyson and launched a COCOMELON series.
Netflix also welcomed Ms. Rachel, another popular kids’ YouTube creator, to the platform earlier this year.
The series has a biblical/moral worldview as Rachel is very kind and teaches children necessary skills, and even teaches them how to say, ‘I love you.’ One questionable element is a character “Jules”, an openly non-binary individual who looks mostly like a boy but has a female voice. Although nothing about Jule’s gender is mentioned, the appearance of this person might be confusing to young children. Overall, this show is worthwhile for children, but discretion and even skipping the parts that include Jules is recommended. MOVIEGUIDE® recommends children aged two and under have no screen time, while preschoolers aged three to five should have extremely limited and monitored screen time. Parental discretion is advised.

Netflix isn’t the only streamer welcoming YouTubers to its platform. Prime Video’s BEAST GAMES, from YouTuber MrBeast, has been a massive success for the streamer. Its series MOLLY-MAE: BEHIND IT ALL gives viewers a peek into the life of a popular British influencer and YouTuber.
Now, Netflix is approaching other big-name YouTube creators like Dude Perfect following Prime Video’s BEAST GAMES success, according to the Wall Street Journal.
