More Detail:
The suspenseful drama DEATH AND THE MAIDEN stars Sigourney Weaver as Pauli Escobar, wife of the newly appointed lead investigator of Civil Rights Violations to investigate violence and torture occurring during their country’s prior dictatorship. When a flat tire forces her husband to catch a ride home, Pauli recognizes the “good Samaritan” as Dr. Roberto Miranda, the man who tortured and raped her when she was a student activist years earlier. Waiting until the two are drunk and asleep, Pauli ties up Dr. Miranda and sets up a mock trial to enact justice for her past abuse. The remainder of the movie involves graphic yet poignant descriptions of Pauli’s earlier ordeal and the resulting repercussions. Though Dr. Miranda continually denies Pauli’s charges, it is not certain until the very end whom to believe!
Excellent acting performances by the three principals enhance the intense and suspenseful, unfolding story line. The movie conveys a thought-provoking glimpse of the atrocities mankind is capable of committing if allowed unrestrained power and control over other members of a society. DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is marred by numerous obscenities and profanities (albeit some of them bring home the violence of the abuse), physical abuse, graphic torture and rape, upper female nudity, and a strong message of justifiable revenge.
