More Detail:
HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U is a comical thriller sequel about a college co-ed who finds herself re-living her birthday and being stalked by a killer again when some science nerds at her college invent a machine that creates a time loop. HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U is not quite as fresh but it has some touching scenes involving the heroine’s relationship with her beloved mother, which are mitigated by lots of foul language and some intense scenes of death and violence.
In the first movie, a college coed named Tree found herself re-living her birthday and having to fend off a serial killer. In the sequel, Tree learns that the time loop was created by her new boyfriend, Carter’s, roommate, a science nerd who invented a machine to manipulate quantum mechanics. The machine creates a new time loop that inserts Tree into an alternate universe where her late mother is still alive. However, in the new universe, Carter is dating one of Tree’s sorority sisters. Tree must choose whether to return to her own universe while trying to stop the killer from killing all her new friends.
HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U is not as fresh as the original movie, but it’s still funny and entertaining. Several scenes between the heroine and her mother are very touching. The mother tells Tree that being her mother was the best thing that ever happened to her. In addition to celebrating motherhood, the movie also has a pro-life message. For example, in one important scene, Tree tells the other students they have a duty to rescue other people from the killer, even at the risk of their own lives.
Despite these positive elements, HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U has lots of foul language and some intense scenes of death and violence. In one segment, the heroine decides to commit suicide instead of letting the killer stab her, to buy time for the science nerds to figure out how to fix the machine. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.
