HOLIDAY IN THE WILD follows the story of Kate, a “retired” veterinarian who travels to Africa alone after her husband abandons her and her son leaves for college. However, Kate doesn’t know that she’ll rediscover her passion and fall in love. HOLIDAY IN THE WILD is a joyful, heartwarming, well-acted television movie. It has a strong Christian, moral worldview promoting selflessness, love, friendship, generosity, celebrating Christmas, and following your calling in life. HOLIDAY IN THE WILD does have one scene showing a dead elephant that’s been poached, however. This scene may be disturbing to some viewers.
The movie begins with Kate’s son leaving to another state for college. To make matters worse, Kate’s husband decides to leave her because he’s no longer happy in their marriage. Kate surprises her husband with a second honeymoon to Africa, but when he decides to move out, she takes the trip alone.
When Kate arrives to the hotel, she meets a man named Derek who asks her why she’s eating alone. In a fit of rage, Kate reveals that she’s alone because her husband left her and storms off to her hotel room. The next day Kate decides to take an airplane ride over the African plains and is surprised to find out that Derek is her pilot.
During the plane ride, Derek spots an elephant’s been poached and a young baby elephant that’s been left behind. Derek rescues the baby elephant, and Kate decides to go with him to the elephant camp. Kate rediscovers her passion for veterinarian work and decides to stay in Africa longer.
Kate and Derek develop a strong friendship, and eventually begin to develop feelings for one another. During Christmas, Kate’s son visits and tells her he’s dropping out of college. Kate realizes she must return home and get back to her normal life. Kate returns to a veterinarian clinic but doesn’t find it as exciting as saving elephants. She needs a new purpose for her life.
