“Impact,” the first episode in the new Netflix series LOST IN SPACE, begins with the Robinsons performing an emergency landing of their spaceship on an alien planet. The landing goes badly, leaving Maureen, the mother, with a broken leg. Their ship sinks in a nearly frozen lake, and Judy, the eldest daughter, is frozen in the lake trying to save some supplies. While getting some magnesium with his father to free Judy, Will encounters a robotic life form after falling through an ice tunnel and landing in a forest.

“Impact” establishes the Robinsons’ strong familial bonds and the desperation of their situation. Family comes before all in this first episode. The individual plot points in LOST IN SPACE seem a bit contrived, but the characters, situations and dialogue are captivating, including the family relationships and Will’s encounter with the robot. This episode feels like a survival adventure with science fiction motifs. “Impact” contains one obscenity, one light profanity, a scene where humans are seen being killed by scary robots with lasers, and dangerous situations. Otherwise, the episode is family friendly.
