In LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT, a romantic comedy on Netflix, a young British man and American woman fall in love on a flight from New York to London, but they lose track of one another. An utterly winning romcom that has the vibe of perennial holiday favorite LOVE ACTUALLY LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT is a light, breezy and adorable love story that has no sexual content and portrays strong family relationships and solid moral values, but it has some gratuitous foul language that warrants caution.

The movie stars Haley Lu Richardson as Hadley, a 20-year-old American college student flying to England to take part in her father’s second wedding. Her parents’ divorce has hurt her emotionally, and she has never fully discussed that fact with her dad, but she’s trying to be a loyal daughter nonetheless.

In the airport, she has a meet-cute with a handsome 22-year-old British man named Oliver played by Ben Hardy. When their flight gets delayed, and then an unexpected twist of fate puts Oliver in the seat right next to Hadley, the two fall in love on the flight.

Hadley assumes he’s also traveling to a wedding in his family, but Oliver’s actually on the way to a family event that’s much more profound.

However, Hadley drops her phone and loses Oliver’s number right as he disappears into the airport crowd after landing. Over the course of the next 24 hours, she tries to balance being a bridesmaid while frantically figuring out how to find Oliver again. Meanwhile, a mysterious

female narrator keeps appearing in different guises and altering circumstances to keep giving them chances to find true love.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT is a light, breezy, adorable love story that portrays strong family relationships and solid moral values. The ingenious script’s use of the narrator is a wonderful touch. Her narration is filled with fun statistics on relationships, travel and all sorts of ridiculous minutiae. It makes the movie engage the mind as well as the heart and provides an intelligence that’s often missing from many current romcoms.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT also has surprising emotional depth. For instance, there’s the way that Hadley and her father handle their strained relationship. Also, Oliver gracefully finds the strength to help his terminally ill mother celebrate her life, where most movies would wallow in tearjerking.

Chemistry is key to movies like this, and the lead acting couple have plenty of magic to offer together. Their desire to kiss is powerful, but the movie refreshingly steers clear of sexual innuendoes or entanglements. However, LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT has some gratuitous foul language, including a mumbled, barely audible “f” word. So, LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT should be seen only by older teenagers and adults.

That said, LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT is a most pleasant surprise and an example of how Netflix and other producers can make their romantic comedies and other movies true winners – by leaving politics and wokeism completely out and serving up more old-fashioned Hollywood entertainment.
