A PLACE IN THE WORLD, a Spanish film subtitled in English, explores a few months in the lives of a modern-day rural Argentinian family. While the parents struggle to unite the local ranchers into a socialistic cooperative, their son Ernesto courts the daughter of the ruling ranch owner. Add to this mix a cynical geologist who has come to help the wealthy ranch owner build a hydroelectric plant. Despite his affiliation with the ruling class, he becomes friendly with Ernesto and his family.
Fine acting performances and an enjoyable, light romantic element are not enough to overcome the fatal error in this film: that being a plethora of social problems with no answers and a total absence of God. The innocent romance between two young people soon leads to suggested promiscuity, while sexual innuendo in the dialogue among the “adult” characters only adds further disappointment. While an interesting study in a world seeking to find its place, A PLACE IN THE WORLD falls short with a socialist viewpoint, brief violence, drunkenness, and foul language and warrants caution for moral viewers.
