AMERICAN WEDDING may be the weakest of the three AMERICAN PIE movies, but one thing’s for sure – the gross, juvenile, immoral, inane, abhorrent comedy is just as bad if not worse.
This time out, Jim wants to propose marriage to Michelle, his girlfriend from the first two movies, but not before Jim’s dad catches them in an embarrassing sexual situation at the fancy restaurant. Now engaged, Michelle wants the wedding to go perfectly. She gets Jim to promise her not to invite Steve Stiffler, the rude, crude guy from the first two movies. Jim agrees, but when he learns that Stiffler can teach him how to dance, something that Michelle has always wanted Jim to learn, Jim agrees to let Steve plan his bachelor party.
Of course, the bachelor party turns into a fiasco, witnessed by Jim’s future in-laws. A quick explanation from Steve makes everything all right, but it earns Steve an invite to the wedding. A rivalry over Michelle’s beautiful sister Cadence between Steve and Jim’s friend Finch threatens to ruin everything for Michelle, however.
Incessantly obscene foul language, rampantly vulgar sexual content, some explicit nudity, and a degenerate, juvenile attitude to shock the audience for shock’s sake are the rule rather than the exception here. At one point, the bride and groom agree with one another that she is a nymphomaniac and he is a pervert. They also agree that this is “perfectly natural normal,” a pet phrase of Jim’s dad, who’s played endearingly by Eugene Levy. In other words, in the world of the AMERICAN PIE movies, the abnormal has become normal.
AMERICAN WEDDING is a perfect example of the kind of movies we get when we remove all standards of decency and taste from popular culture. The only thing that even approaches, just barely, a modicum of clean comedy is a goofy dance scene starring the Stiffler character. Of course, the filmmakers and the actors behind it all are laughing all the way to the bank, which proves the biblical aphorism that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
