Chris Elliott stars and fails miserably in a vain attempt to carry an entire film, while Touchstone Pictures (Disney) fails just as miserably in producing this poorly written, abysmally stupid excuse for a comedy, CABIN BOY. Worse than a bad Saturday Night Live skit, the film promotes an amoral worldview where illicit sex is necessary to attain manhood. The story revolves around the wealthy, spoiled and insufferably rude Nathanial Mayweather (Chris Elliott), who has just graduated from finishing school. He mistakenly boards the wrong ship on his way home to daddy and finds himself surrounded by drunken fishermen who have no time for his attitude. They quickly put him to work as ship’s cabin boy, giving him all the dirty jobs a nasty fishing boat provides. Nathanial has an obvious aversion to manual labor, but soon takes to his work with unexplained fervor.
Elliott’s feeble attempt to cover the “spoiled brat learns the meaning of life from honest seafarers” theme falls flat. CABIN BOY is offensive from both moral and esthetic viewpoints, failing in areas from directing and producing to writing and acting. With absolutely no redeeming value and no appeal, CABIN BOY is certainly a waste of Disney’s money. Don’t waste yours on it as well.
