More Detail:
A beautiful woman’s carefully orchestrated plan to meet and win a wealthy Los Angeles architect self-destructs in the intriguing psychological thriller DREAM LOVER. Having seen the handsome James Spader at a New York City party, Madchen Amick embarks on a plan to become his wife and then drive him to behavior that will get him committed. Once happily married, she engages in an affair which she wants him to discover. Upon making that discovery, he loses control and strikes her several times, knocking her to the floor. Spader is taken in for a psychological evaluation and, with the help of some carefully choreographed witnesses, is placed in an asylum for treatment for his violent behavior. Pretending to take his medication, he patiently sets a trap for his scheming wife and lures her to visit him, whereupon he strangles her.
James Spader turns in a solid performance as the yuppie architect, and Madchen Amick is quite mysterious as his wife Lena. Director Michael Kazan punctuates the film with surrealistic cuts to interesting but bizarre carnival scenes. Though technically creative and innovative, unacceptable elements such as murder, obscenity, graphic fornication, nudity, and violence against women make DREAM LOVER a movie to avoid.
