More Detail:
There have been innumerable books, websites, articles, and dissertations on J.R.R. Tolkien’s LORD OF THE RINGS – enough to fill a small library. Many have great merit, and I trust that the book we just wrote for Crossways, FRODO AND HARRY, will be among them. Matthew T. Dickerson’s book, FOLLOWING GANDALF, stands out among THE LORD OF THE RINGS library of books, websites, articles, and dissertations. It gives an easy to read, yet profound insight into the moral and Christian themes of THE LORD OF THE RINGS.
Being a professor at Middlebury College, a secular school, Dr. Dickerson does not hit the reader over the head by reading Christianity into LORD OF THE RINGS. He recognizes that J.R.R. Tolkien did not want the book to be an allegory and that Tolkien avoided metaphors. So he carefully and winsomely unpacks THE LORD OF THE RINGS and Tolkien’s other books to reveal a wonderful portrait of the moral and spiritual values that underline these great works.
Next to the books themselves, this is “must reading” – and a pleasure to read. Even with all that I’ve read on THE LORD OF THE RINGS, I was led to deeper levels of understanding and appreciation for Tolkien’s masterpiece. Thank you Matt.
