REALITY BITES is the film of Generation X, a group of teens who have grown up from and walked away from the BREAKFAST CLUB. The teens of ten years ago have just graduated from college and are considering entering the work force. The film explores the experiences of four individuals from this generation immediately following graduation: Lelaina, Vicky, Sammy, and Troy. Lelaina, valedictorian of her class, pencils in her diary “#66” for the most recent lover. Her roommate, Vicky, a GAP employee, worries about getting AIDS, but does little to insure she won’t. Sammy dresses like the preppy college student whom parents may consider studious and seems in touch with reality, but he is a homosexual looking for a lover. Troy is a grungy pseudo-philosopher portrayed with a goatee and a guitar. Fired from his 11th job, Troy moves in with Lelaina and Vicky, and he dates Lelaina. The trouble between the two begins when well-groomed Michael walks into the movie and sweeps Lelaina off her feet. In the end, Lelaina leaves the honest, hard-working Michael for Troy.
Those who are members of this generation may feel in touch with the characters’ lackadaisical attitudes and drunken philosophies. However, the entertainment industry and John Hughes know what this generation is like because they played a big role in its formation.
