STEP BROTHERS is mostly an excuse to indulge in vulgar, infantile behavior between two foul-mouthed grown men. In that respect, except for the vulgarity and obscenities, the comedy recalls the slapstick tradition of early comic teams such as the Three Stooges and Laurel and Hardy.

STEP BROTHERS is another in a recent spate of crude numskull, slacker, stoner comedies. This one is rated R so that the filmmakers could use the “f” word. Lucky us.
Developed by the team that brought audiences TALLADEGA NIGHTS, the movie stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as two older slackers, Brennan and Dale, respectively, who still live with their parents because they have trouble getting steady jobs. When their father and mother get married, the two become step brothers sharing the same room.
Dale and Brennan don’t get along at all, and keep disrupting the house. Then, they discover the things they have in common, especially their hatred for Brennan’s younger brother Derek, an obnoxious over-achiever whom Dale punches in the face. Dale and Brennan decide to form their own entertainment company. When, however, they wreck Dale’s father’s boat while making a rap video, their parents split apart.
To get their parents back together, Dale and Brennan orchestrate an elaborate plan, but can they become mature enough to pull it off?

The main message of the movie seems to be that growing up means how to become a mature adult while at the same time maintaining one’s child-like exuberance for life. At least the protagonists try to set aright what they have destroyed by getting their step-parents back together. Eventually, family reconciliation does occur, even with the obnoxious step brother Derrick.
