More Detail:

When boiled down to the basics, THE PAGEMASTER is a recruiting film for the Public Library system. Thanks to a creative plot line and some quirky animated characters, this wholesome romp through classical children’s literature is fun-filled and thrill-packed. Macaulay Culkin stars as fretful Rich Tyler. Surveying his new tree house, the serious youngster reminds Dad that 11 percent of all accidents involve ladders and another 7 percent involve trees. When Dad sends him to buy nails, Rich is caught in a rainstorm and ducks into the library. There he meets a desk clerk named Mr. Dewey (as in decimal system), played by Christopher Lloyd. A tumble on his noggin transports Rich into a dream world where everything comes to life, including the books, and where Rich becomes an animated version of himself. Soon, Rich encounters three book-shaped characters named Adventure, Fantasy and Horror, and the four set out to locate the ultimate goal: some place called Exit.

Although there are plenty of mythical characters who exhibit supernatural powers, the emphasis is placed on friendship and loyalty as Rich and his friends face dangers together. The message is simple enough for a 4-year-old to understand: reading can be an adventure. THE PAGEMASTER is presented in such a gentle, creative way as to inspire even grownups to consider a trip to the library.
