What You Need To Know:
THE RUINS is simply another vile, graphic horror movie that focuses on bloodletting and gruesome imagery rather than suspense and true fright. The plot pacing is off, the bloodthirsty vines are never explained, and the evil is never seen as anything that can be stopped. The movie becomes a hopeless glorification of gluttonous gore, with strong foul language, nudity and some sexual references.

THE RUINS, the latest release in a long line of pagan horror movies, follows two unmarried couples who steal away to Mexico for a leisurely vacation. Instead of leisure, though, the four young people must fight for their lives against an ancient evil lurking in the nearby Mayan ruins.
With only one day of their vacation left, the young couples meet a young man from Munich who is preparing to take a trip to find his lost brother, an archeologist who went missing several days before. The young man convinces the fearless foursome to join him, and they decide to take one last sight-seeing adventure and explore some uncharted Mayan ruins way off the beaten path deep in the heart of the jungle.
After they arrive, they find a large Mayan pyramid overgrown with strange-looking vines. Also, right on their heels is a local village mob that will not let them pass back into the jungle and forces them, at gunpoint, to the top of the ruins. Once at the top, the adventurers realize they are trapped without any hope of escape. The villagers below, it seems, are not letting them pass because they are keeping close boundaries around the ancient evil that lurks in the ruins.
Not long after, the young couples find that the ancient evil that lurks in the ruins are deadly, flesh-eating vines that have set their target on the team now standing atop the ancient Mayan site. One by one, the trapped travelers fall prey to not only the deadly vines but also to madness and hopelessness. The final two members must find a way off the ruins and past the deadly villagers below if they ever hope to stay alive.
