A DAY IN OCTOBER tells how the resistance smuggled 7,500 Jews out of Denmark the night before the Nazis planned to haul them off to concentration camps. In Copenhagen, Denmark, in September, 1943, Niels Jensen leads an attack on a German munitions factory. Wounded, Niels barely escapes. Sara Kublitz, a Jewish girl, finds Niels and hides him. Her mother, Emma, brings him into the house. When her father, Solomon, the bookkeeper at the factory, finds the mutilated bodies of Niels’s friends, he agrees to carry a bomb into the factory. When the factory blows up, Niels and the Kublitz’s flee. Soloman and Emma find out that in two days the Nazis will arrest every Jew in Denmark. Niels stows the Kublitz’s and some other Jews in a brick plant, planning to send them to neutral Sweden by fishing boat.
A DAY IN OCTOBER is a magnificent film which contrasts man’s nobility with his fallen nature. Throughout the film, the Kublitz’s grow in faith. The acting, directing and cinematography are superb. Regrettably, there are four profanities and implied promiscuity. Also, the love story is not credible. However, A DAY IN OCTOBER is one of those rare movies which deserves to be commended and seen.
