A PYROMANIAC’S LOVE STORY (which deserves a better title) is a whimsical, touching romantic comedy with an Italian flair. In the movie, Sergio desperately loves Hattie who thinks of Sergio as her friend. When Hattie says that she wants to see the world, Sergio tries to ask his boss, Mr. Linzer, for a raise. Before he can, Mr. Linzer confesses that the bakery is bankrupt and that all that can save him, so he can continue to provide for his beloved wife, is a total loss in a fire. That night, the shop burns. Sergio blames Mr. Linzer until he is whisked off to the offices of the wealthy Mr. Lumpke, who offers Sergio $25,000 to take the rap for his son Garet, who set the fire. Lumpke guarantees Sergio that he will be let “off” easy, and when he gets out of jail, he can use the money to travel with Hattie. Sergio goes to jail but is released when Mr. Linzer confesses to the fire because he is trying to protect Sergio. Next, Mrs. Linzer confesses to save Mr. Linzer. In the end, true love triumphs over a complex web of romance.
A PYROMANIAC’S LOVE STORY is surprisingly clean and wholesome. It commends the good and rebukes the bad including lying, selfishness, illicit sex, violence, and pyromania. It is a touching story of love and will capture your heart while it makes you laugh. For those who liked SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, A PYROMANIAC’S STORY will be their cup of tea.
