In A TALE OF WINTER, a young woman trapped by her longing for a lost lover from the past explores the boundaries of true and false love as she toggles back and forth between two men who love her. As the film opens, Felicie falls passionately in love with Charles. After a brief affair, she is pregnant. Through a mistake, she gives Charles the wrong address, and he is unable to contact her. Five years later, two other men are interested in Felicie: her hairstylist boss, Maxence, who can provide security, and Loic, the local librarian, who is an intellectual. However, Felicie still longs for Charles. Then, her life changes when she goes to a church and finds God. Later, riding a bus with her five-year-old daughter, she meets Charles again. The movie ends with the question unanswered as to whether Charles and Felicie will stay together or not.
The film is another brilliant exploration of contemporary moral problems by filmmaker Eric Rohmer who has dedicated his entire career to confronting questions of faith, love and morality in the world of modern romance. A contemporary moralist without being preachy, he has been filming a cycle of movies he calls “Morals and Proverbs.” Although it commends Christianity, conversion and morality, A TALE OF WINTER is marred by brief nudity and brief fornication.
